4 days to go and 500 on board!

With 4 days to go until the pre-conference workshops and registration now closed @ 500 participants the countdown for DH 2012 has definitely begun. Here’s some updated information:

• we’ve received the Book of Abstracts in print – it’s 579 pages thick, so you better check your luggage allowance…
• all abstracts are now online
• the DH 2012 conference app for iPhone is already available at the App Store; the Android version will follow soon

historical campus tour

While walking around the campus, you might stumble right into them: cobble stones embedded in the sidewalk pavement, the so-called ‘Stolpersteine’. These monuments created by Gunter Demnig commemorate Jewish Life in the university’s neighbourhood. From Goethe to illusions of swan lake – State Theatres in Hamburg

In monumental historical buildings, in old factories and even on the street – one may find the performing arts everywhere in Hamburg. There are Cabarets and Varietés in „St. Pauli“, the „HafenCity“ or the „Kampnagel“-factory in the less central quarter of „Winterhunde“ and there is even an English Theatre in the „Mundsburg“ district. But the three biggest and most frequented theatres in town are the state theatres: „Deutsches Schauspielhaus“, „Thalia-Theater“ and „Staatsoper“, all of which together consist of two houses with long-standing drama-traditions and the opera house.

iFormations on the way to Hamburg!

We will host the exhibition iFormations from Canada at DH 2012! We are very excited that we can finally realize this ambitious project by three young Canadian artists and present the work during the conference! So if you need a break from presentations, poster sessions and scientific discussions, have a look at iFormations in the main building west wing.

The Sound of Hamburg

Frankfurt has got one, Cologne has got one and, of course, Hamburg has got one too – a school of its own. As for Frankfurt it‘s the socio-philosophic »Frankfurter Schule« around Adorno and Horkheimer. Cologne’s answer has been a literary circle including Rolf Dieter Brinkmann and Dieter Wellershoff in the 1970s. In contrast to these, the artists of the »Hamburger Schule« are still quite alive today. »Blumfeld« (»Flowerfield« in Englisch), »Die Sterne« (»The Stars«) and »Die goldenen Zitronen« (»The Golden Lemons«) are pop bands transporting intellectual discourses into music.

The Fishmarket and the wicker basket

Almost everyone in Hamburg has one. A very simple and cheap looking wicker basket. They are the lovingly collected testimonies of our fishmarket experiences. Every sunday from 7:00 am to 9:30 am around 70.000 people meet near the »Landungsbrücken« to buy fresh fruit or vegetables, flowers and (of course) fish. The market traders shout and haggle while many happy looking customers carry their bargains home in wicker baskets.

Hamburg‘s retro-party of the year …

is announced like this: »pneumatic tube for you!« Sounding archaic, it comes via e-mail – and fits an event that will beam you back to the swinging 20s and 30s. Four times a year Hamburg‘s Gentlemen put on penguin suits and silk hats. Ladys go out in charleston dresses, wearing feathers in their hair. At the underground station »Feldstraße« one meets the most colourful partypeople.

However, this is not about the conference as such and all the related stuff you already read about on the informative pages of our website. This is more about atmosphere, culture and the art of living in Hamburg.

400+ @DH2012 !

We’ve just crossed another threshhold: DH 2012 has now more than 400 registrations! So we’ve already had to switch the opening plenary to the Ernst-Cassirer Lecture Hall, which can seat 622 digital humanists.

(Next step: the soccer arena with 51.750 capacity?) – Well, the conference team is looking forward to your visit and excited about this tremendous response!
